Graduate Certificate in Addictions and Substance Abuse Counseling

Course location/delivery: The Certificate is offered at the Tampa campus.

Brief description: This certificate is primarily designed for graduate students in rehabilitation counseling, mental health counseling, social work, psychology or other human services disciplines or for human services professionals who desire to learn about addictions and substance abuse counseling. The certificate program is an interdisciplinary effort on behalf of the Department of Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling in the College of Behavioral & Community Sciences and the Department of Mental Health Law Policy in the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute.

CEU/licensure credit: This graduate certificate program is approved for education and training by the Certification Board for Addictions Professionals of Florida (CBAPF approved provider #179A).

Credit toward graduate degree: Certificate course credits may be applied to a graduate degree with departmental approval.

Transfer credit: All students who wish to pursue graduate certificates must be admitted to the graduate certificate program before a second graduate certificate course is completed.

Standardized tests: GRE testing is not required for admission to the certificate program. However, the GRE is required for admission to the graduate degree programs. International students must submit a TOEFL score when English is not the native language. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 79 on the web-based test is required.

Admission requirements: The applicant must have a graduate degree in a human services discipline or currently be enrolled in a graduate degree program.

  3. Official transcripts
  4. Two letters of recommendation

Registration process: First, consult with the certificate program advisor and obtain an electronic course permit if necessary. Then go to http://usfonline.admin.usf.edu/, the link to OASIS, USF's online registration system. Follow directions given online.

Total program hours:
15 credit hours. Courses must be taken in the following sequence unless permission is granted by the certificate director. The three hour practicum must include 14 hours of work per week in a supervised field facility.
