Graduate Certificate in Disabilities Education: Severe/Profound**

Course location/delivery: This certificate is offered fully online.

Brief description: This certificate supports teachers and related professionals to work more effectively with students who have labels of severe/profound disbilities in sensitively accessing general education curriculum in meaningful ways. It is anticipated that these courses will meet the requirements of the Florida Department of Education's Endorsement in the field of Intellectual Development Disabilities (Severe/Profound). Collaborative and multidisciplinary working is a theme through each course as a way to increase student access to general education curriculum in the least restrictive environment.

Credit toward graduate degree: Up to 12 hours of certificate course credits may be applied to a graduate degree with departmental approval.

Transfer credit: All students who wish to pursue graduate certificates must be admitted to the graduate certificate program before a second graduate certificate course is completed.

Standardized tests: International students must submit a TOEFL score when English is not the native language. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 79 on the web-based test is required.

Admission requirements: Applicants must hold an earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and the following:

  1. Approximately 30 undergraduate credit hours of coursework in education or a related field (speech and language pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy that deals specifically with students who have severe/profound disabilities)
  2. Preference will be given to professional practitioners who have a minimum one year experience working with students with severe/profound learning disabilities

  1. A 250-word letter of interest stating your objectives in pursuing this course of study
  2. A resume
  3. Official transcripts

Registration process: First, consult with the certificate program advisor and obtain an electronic course permit if necessary. Then go to http://usfonline.admin.usf.edu/, the link to OASIS, USF's online registration system. Follow directions given online.
